Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Corinn Taylor.

Hi Dr. Taylor, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

I am an author, motivational speaker, experienced personal development life coach, business coach, and a mother of 3 beautiful children, Justin (24), Christian (18), and Ava (14). I am a Registered Nurse (RN), with a Master’s in Community Health Nursing and a Doctorate Degree in Organizational Leadership, and have more than 26 years’ experience as a Senior Leader coaching teams, individuals, and leading organizations as a catalyst for transformation.

I have overcome many challenges in my personal life that allowed me to tap into my inner power and purpose. Raised by a single mother with her 4 siblings in the inner city, I faced many challenges associated with living in poverty that made me resilient and determined to succeed. When I transitioned to college, I was told that with my mediocre test scores, I would not graduate from college. The same resiliency and determination that I grew up with allowed me to continue to work hard and achieve her educational goals despite what I was told. I went on to obtain her Master’s Degree and ultimately obtaining her Doctorate in Organizational Leadership. These life experiences although challenging and difficult, allowed me to realize that I was more than my past and I had everything I needed to succeed within me.

My personal passion is to empower, inspire and transform women and girls to engage on a Journey of Self-Discovery to become the best version of themselves. In my book, “The Journey of Self-Discovery: Tapping into your Inner Power and Purpose”, I take individuals’ on a Journey of Self-Discovery through 6 areas of self-care/wellness that influences everyone’s life journey and provide a roadmap on how you can evolve and grow in each area.

The 6 areas include:

1. Physical Wellness is the ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle (doctor visits, routine checkups, balanced diet, and exercise) which includes appropriate management of health conditions or diagnosis.

2. Mental/Emotional Wellness is how you cope with difficult situations, balance emotions, and includes how you manage any diagnosed mental health disorders including depression.

3. Spiritual Wellness is the ability to realize establish peace and harmony in our lives through understanding that there is a higher power that binds us together.

4. Social Wellness is about healthy relationships. It is the ability to relate to and connect to other people as well as establish and maintain positive relationships with family, friends, and co-workers.

5. Intellectual/Career Wellness; Intellectual Wellness is having the ability to have an open mind to new ideas and experiences which intertwines with Career Wellness. Career Wellness is the ability to get personal fulfillment from our jobs or our chosen career path (including being an entrepreneur) while maintain work-life balance.

6. Financial Wellness is understanding your financial situation, learning how to manage your money, and having knowledge of where your money comes from and where it goes.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

The road was not smooth. I encountered many challenges in my personal and professional journey. Since I struggle with test-taking, my ACT score was very low (like a 17), and I was told that I would not graduate from college. I was admitted in pre-nursing with the goal to improve my GPA to get into the “nursing” program at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing; I was told to retake classes that I got B’s in to get As to improve my GPA. I knew this was not the option as my family did not have the money to retake classes since my family was still living in poverty. I was also told that maybe nursing isn’t for me and gave me recommendations to be a nursing assistant. I refused to accept this information and left UC to attend the Good Samaritan School of Nursing especially since I already took 3 years of courses and all I would need to do is take my clinicals to become an RN. After graduating from the Good Samaritan School of Nursing with my RN, I went back to UC the following fall to complete my BSN since this was the original goal when I came to Cincinnati. I completed the coursework with flying colors and decided to go back to school after graduation to obtain my Master’s Degree in Community Health Nursing and was admitted provisionally due to my low GRE scores. I was a professional student since graduating from high school until I received my Master’s Degree. My graduate degree allowed me to realize that although my test scores were low, I realized that test scores don’t indicate your level of success or how smart you are. After working for many years, I found my inner passion and purpose was investing in the community, women, and girls to inspire and empower them to believe in themselves and put in the work to achieve success.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Empowerment Coaching Academy?

“The Empowerment Coaching Academy”, a nonprofit organization that focuses on empowering and inspiring Black Women & Girls to be the best version of themselves to produce transformational results in their lives by bridging the gap between where they are & where they want to be. This is accomplished by helping individuals create the life they want by unlocking the strengths within to build confidence, teaching how to be strong in the face of adversity & working hand in hand with individuals to create a purpose-driven life.

The Empowerment Coaching Academy offers a variety of Signature Masterclasses including but not limited to:

  • Mind, Body, and Soul Self-Care
  • Managing Anxiety and Stress
  • Being your Authentic Self
  • Developing and Maintaining Healthy Relationships
  • Building Resilience and Learning to Persevere

What sets me apart from other coaching programs is the amount 1:1 support (hand-holding) I provide. I give content-rich curriculum (videos) AND after clients complete each learning session, I meet with clients after each session (5 times) to review assigned homework and assessments to provide feedback and direction. The end goal of this 1:1 support is to build upon each session to create the clients’ final I AM Empowered engagement plan. This engagement plan gives clients a personalized roadmap that will help the client be successful after course completion to continue to do “the work” to achieve their dreams.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?

The most important lesson I learned along my journey is to never allow your present situation to dictate your future state. If allowed those folk at the College of Nursing to dictate my life, I would have not completed the highest degree possible: a doctorate. I tell my clients to believe in yourself because you have everything inside you to succeed. Hard work always pays off.
